IEA SHC Report: Solar Heat Worldwide – Global Market Development and Trends 2016 / Detailed Market Figures 2015

Solar thermal plants help saving 40.3 million tons of oil and reduce CO2 emissions by 130 million tons per year. This is one of the key findings of the report, published by the International Energy Agency Solar Heating and Cooling Programme (IEA SHC). With data from 66 countries, it is the most comprehensive annual evaluation of solar heating and cooling markets worldwide. The report points out the relevance of solar thermal technology for climate protection. By the end of 2016, solar thermal installations with a total capacity of 456 gigawatt thermal (GWth) were in operation worldwide, providing 375 terrawatt hours (TWh) of clean heating or cooling energy. In terms of capacity Solar Thermal is by far more important than PV (303 GW) and Solar Thermal Power (5 GW). Megawatt-scale solar thermal systems for district heating and process heat have gained importance in 2016.

The report is split into two parts. The first part (chapters 3 – 5) gives an overall overview of the global solar thermal market development in 2016. In addition, general trends are described and detailed 2016 data on successful applications, such as solar assisted district heating and solar heat for industrial processes are documented. The concluding chapter of the first part is focused on solar thermal system cost and levelized cost of solar heat for different applications and regions worldwide. The second part comprising chapters 6 – 8 presents detailed market figures for the year 2015 from 66 countries around the globe.

In diesem Sinne schafft die vorliegende Marktstudie “Innovative Energietechnologien in Österreich – Marktentwicklung 2015“ diese Grundlagen für die Bereiche feste Biomasse, Photovoltaik, Solarthermie, Wärmepumpen und Windkraft. Neben der Dokumentation von Verkaufszahlen für den Inlandsmarkt und den Exportmarkt werden volkswirtschaftliche Kennzahlen im Bereich der Umsätze, der Arbeitsplätze und der CO2-Effekte dieser Technologien präsentiert.

IEA SHC Report: Solar Heat Worldwide – Edition 2016

The report comprises solar thermal market data from 61 countries. Besides the data on the worldwide market development and trends in solar thermal applications this year’s edition also shows the 1st time levelized costs for solar thermal generated heat (LCOH) for a number of selected countries and different applications. Also the data basis on employment and turnover of the sector is now significantly improved.

The total solar thermal collectors in operation worldwide by the end of 2015 is 435 GWth, or 622 million square meters of collector area.

Besides Asia (excluding China) and Latin America all economic regions showed decreasing markets in 2014. This indicates a trend change. Compared to the year 2013 the new collector installations worldwide decreased by 15.2%.
